"I have been using the new Brightscreen in my 5D for about two weeks, but I didn't get it's full value until last night.
I shot a wedding which didn't start until 7:00 p.m. I started shooting after dark, and I hate to use all flash. In the church and at the reception I was shooting at 1/15 -- f1.4 and 1.8 at ISO between 800 and 1600. I was literally focusing and shooting in candle light. The fact that I was not only able to do this, but do it well is a testament to the 5D, but that's for another thread.
The point here is that the bright screen allowed me to really see the details in a nearly dark room. I was able to focus quickly and with confidence every time. It even seemed like the AF was faster with the Brightscreen, although the Brightscreen people say it makes no difference in AF.
In addition, it was like using the cameras I cut my teeth on, like the Nikon FE-2, but that would only matter to us old-timers.
The brightscreen is pricey. At nearly $200 each you think twice about getting one, but since I plan to keep the 5D for a good long while, it's really worth it. I have two bodies and only had the Brightscreen in one. There was a clear difference in low light. I'll be ordering another.

Split Screen/Microprism - In a word, AWESOME. This it the reason I bought the screen and it was deja vu. I really like the diagonal split screen and microprism. It is very obvious when your subject comes into focus. The microprism and split screen circles are large and busy. Large is good because when in focus it is is totally clear.

How would I describe the prototype Brightscreen I
tried for a couple of hours today, in a word?
Magnificent.

from real letters from satisfied customers:
"My camera room is designed for low-key photography and with just modeling lights on it was hard to focus properly. When I dropped in the BRIGHTSCREEN it was just like turning on the lights. I am able to work faster and my photographs are sharper, due to the fact I can see to focus better."
LARRY BOULER
"I've been a professional photographer for a long time and I've seen my share of accessories, some that work well and some that don't. But it seems to me that BRIGHTSCREEN earns a very high mark on the Chuck DeLaney list of useful photographic gear."
CHUCK DELANEY, DEAN , NEW YORK INSTITUTE OF PHOTOGRAPHY
"We want to let you know how pleased we are with the BRIGHTSCREENS we have in use. It is a pleasure to find a product that actually does what it advertises! We are happy with the performance in all formats and all camera types. The brightness is greatly increased and this makes focusing and composition much easier and more accurate. Thanks for a most helpful product."
W. HUBERT GENTRY, M. PHOTO., CR
"This is a tremendous product you have developed. I only wish that I knew of it years earlier. It has been very difficult for me to focus dimly lit situations with the RB-RZ cameras until now. The performance of the "BRIGHTSCREEN" is outstanding! I would be happy to recommend it to anyone. Now I am able to see detail on the edges and in the corners that was nearly impossible before."
SAM GRAY, M. PHOTO. CR.,C.P.P.
"I want to thank you for introducing me to the new 20/20 "BRIGHTSCREEN", focusing screen. It is one of the best discoveries that I have found in a long time. It has made focusing so much easier I am going to switch all my cameras over to it. I would definitely recommend it to everyone. "BRIGHTSCREEN" will save you from eye strain as you will find it so much easier to focus. It is very much worth the price."
COLBERT P. HOWELL, M. PHOTO. CR., C.P.P.
"I want to let you know that after testing the different focusing screens that are available in the market for my Bronica SQAI, I found one that has the qualities that I think a good focusing screen needs: such as being bright and having enough contrast to make it easy to focus in very low light. The brand of this screen is BRIGHTSCREEN 20/20. I found it far superior to any other in the market."
FABIAN KRAJMALNIK CR. PHOTO., C.P.P.
"I cannot imagine using my cameras without Brightscreen ground glass or magnifiers. You work better, quicker and more accurately when you can see your subjects clearly and easily. A great investment for all professional photographers!"
JEFF LUBIN, M. PHOTO. CR.
"For the past six months I have been having a slight difficulty in focusing my camera, and even had to talk a customer down from a 30x40 print because I was worried about sharpness. We just received our first 24x30 print since I started using my new eye piece, and we were all amazed!!!! It was really, really sharp! I am so excited about your new product that I can't wait to tell my students and recommend it when I am speaking. I hope you will be able to keep up with the demand there will be for this product! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you."
LISA MURPHEY, M. PHOTO. CR., C.P.P.
"I just realized how much I've taken your Brightscreen for granted! I borrowed an assistant's camera the other day, took one look through it and said, "What's wrong with your camera?" I thought his aperture wasn't opening all the way. Then I figured it out, "Aha! no Brightscreen!" Honestly, I couldn't believe the difference. I don't think I could do the work without it. I shoot in low level light quickly and easily and have no problem focusing my soft-focus lens. I use to have to take off the viewfinder and use a loupe on the ground glass. Thanks, Jim for making my life much easier!"
DAVID PETERS M. PHOTO. CR.,F., A.S.P
"The Brightscreen Accurfocus Magnifier is a superb asset when creating environmental portraiture, especially when using long lenses (150-250mm) and the subjects are small in proportion to the image size. I have grown so fond of it that I leave it on the prism all the time. When used with the Brightscreen 20/20 Microprism, it makes a terrific combination for creating the sharpest photograph possible."
STEWART POWERS, M. PHOTOG., CR., MFA, XXV
"Unfortunately, I have bought most of the "Brand x" screens before discovering yours. Of course I can now state better that BRIGHTSCREEN allows me to focus faster and more accurately. Speed is an essential part of making a good photograph. The BRIGHTSCREEN allows me to focus faster and more accurately. I am changing all my screens including the new one in my Hasselblad 503x."
RALPH ROMAGUERA, M. PHOTO. CR., C.P.P.
"I have been struggling for years with every viewfinder screen that Hasselblad makes. Your Brightscreen viewfinder screens offer the best in brightness and ease of focusing of any other I have tried. I learned the expensive way that brightness alone does not necessarily make it easy to focus."
ANTONI SCOTT
"Let me first say how much I have enjoyed your products. If your company is ever looking for a photographer to talk about your products I am your man!"
KIRK VOCLAIN PHOTOGRAPHY
"It indeed shines a new light, a "BRIGHTSCREEN" light on my photography that makes focusing a breeze."
DAVID A. ZISER, M. PHOTO. CR., F-MR, C.P.P.
I credit this company for keeping me behind the camera. I would have given up a looooong time ago, had I not taken advantage of the many fantastic items that I got from Brightscreen. Their glass alone, is the brightest, clearest and easiest to work with that I've seen anywhere!
